Idioms: Chapter: 3 Customer Relation Skills The Letter by G.G. Joshi

 

Idioms:

1.      Pull wool over people’s eyes: to deceive someone

2.      Sit on the fence: someone who does not want to choose or make decision

3.      Take with grain of salt: to not take what someone says too seriously

4.      Whole nine yards: everything; all of it

5.      Bits off more than you can chew: to take on a task that is too much for you to handle

6.      Scratch someone’s back: to help someone out with the assumption that they will return the favour in the future.

7.      A short fuse: have a quick temper

8.      A taste of your own medicine: bad treatment deservedly received fopr treating other people badly

9.      butterfly in my stomach: to be nervous

10.  hit the books: to study

11.  to make a game of : to mock or ridicule someone

12.  to lose temper: to got angry

 

Example:

 

1.      Pull the wool over people's eyes: He tried to pull the wool over his boss's eyes by pretending to be sick when he wasn't.

 

2.      Sit on the fence: Mary didn't want to choose between the two options, so she decided to sit on the fence and see how things developed.

 

3.      Take it with a grain of salt: When you read online reviews, it's a good idea to take them with a grain of salt because not everyone's opinion is accurate.

 

4.      The whole nine yards: She wanted to plan the perfect wedding, so she went all out and did the whole nine yards, from the decorations to the music.

 

5.      Bite off more than you can chew: John thought he could manage three jobs at once, but he soon realized he had bitten off more than he could chew.

 

6.      Scratch someone's back with the expectation they'll return the favor: I helped my neighbor move, scratching his back, hoping that he'd help me when I needed it.

 

7.      A short fuse: Because of his short fuse, he got angry very easily, often over minor issues.

 

8.      A taste of your own medicine: After constantly teasing his little sister, he finally received a taste of his own medicine when she pranked him back.

 

9.      Butterflies in my stomach: Before her big presentation, she had butterflies in her stomach because she was so nervous.

 

10.  Hit the books: To succeed in the exam, I need to hit the books and study hard.

 

11.  Make a game out of: Instead of helping, some kids at school would make a game out of teasing him, which hurt his feelings.

 

12.  Lose one's temper: He rarely loses his temper, but the constant noise from the construction site next door finally made him snap.
