 Understanding the Story 

1.      Where does William Morris work and what job does he do?

William Morris work at an Antique shop of Regnier in Knightsbridge as a sales assistant or salesman.

2.      What are his hobbies?

William Morris found of reading (especially of detective fiction) painting (only water colors yet), doing odds and ends about the house, doing odd jobs too.

3.      Who are his favorite writers?

William Morris’ favorite writers are Poe and Collins, Gaboriau, Holmes and Trent and Dr. Thorndyke. Mostly belongs to the detective fictions.

4.      Why is he interested in detective fiction?

Wiiliam Morris had been reading the detective fiction more than thirty years and he found that detective stories deals with real detection, where the detective is not just a kind of superman but an ordinary one who has nothing but sharp eye and common sense to rely on.

5.      Why does he observe people whenever he travels?

Out of curiosity through observation he comes to know about human nature in general. A same method as the birdwatcher. So whenever he travels he seldom misses people around him at first glance.

6.      What is the problem that he faces in his workplace?

The problem that he faced in his workplace was that the antique ring was stolen.In the last seventeen years of Morris’s career that anything in his in-charge at the shop has vanished like the antique Floral ring which Regnier like the most.

7.      How does his reading help him in solving the problem at the store?

His reading helped him in solving the problem at the store because he keenly observed the behavior of the girl and used his common sense.

8.      How does he work closely with Miss Susskind and Mr Reginer to solve the problem?

He worked closely with Miss Susskind and Mr Reginer to solve the problem by very attentively observing the man and the girl's behavior.
