Teamwork Skills Chapter: 2 Whitewashing the Fence by Mark Twin Understanding from the story:

 Understanding from the story:

1.      Describe the mood expressed in the opening lines of the story?

In the opening lines of "Whitewashing the Fence" by Mark Twain, the mood expressed is one of boredom and reluctance.

2.      How was Tom feeling on that Saturday Morning? Why was he feeling that way?

On that Saturday morning, Tom was feeling despondent and disheartened. He was assigned the task of whitewashing the fence as a punishment for his mischief. He felt this way because he saw the task as tedious and unappealing, and he wanted to avoid doing it. Tom's feelings of reluctance and boredom stemmed from the fact that he would rather spend his time playing and having fun with his friends rather than engaging in a mundane chore.

3.      What happened when Jim started to whitewash the fence?

When Jim started whitewashing the fence, he surprised Tom by taking great pride and joy in the task. Tom became envious and cleverly convinced his friends to do the work for him in exchange for their belongings.

4.      Is Tom afraid of Aunt Polly? Give reason for your answer.

Yes, Tom is afraid of Aunt Polly. The reason for this fear is that Aunt Polly is his strict and authoritative guardian. She is quick to scold and punish him whenever he misbehaves or gets into trouble. Tom fears facing her anger and discipline, which makes him cautious about his actions when he knows Aunt Polly is around.

5.      How does Tom succeed in getting Ben to whitewash the fence?

Tom convinces Ben to whitewash the fence by making it seem like a fun and prestigious job, arousing Ben's curiosity and eagerness to prove himself.

6.      How does Tom Manage to become wealthy by the afrternoon? Mention some of the things that made him wealthy.

In Mark Twain's story "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," Tom managed to become wealthy by the afternoon through his clever manipulation of his friends. He used reverse psychology, making them think that whitewashing the fence was so much fun that they eagerly paid him with small treasures, such as marbles, to have the privilege of taking over the chore. Tom's ability to turn an undesirable task into a desirable one allowed him to accumulate wealth by the end of the day.

7.      How does the author differentiate between work and play?

In "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," the author distinguishes work as laborious tasks imposed by adults, such as chores and school, while play represents enjoyable, spontaneous activities that bring joy and freedom, often involving imaginative adventures with friends. Tom Sawyer prefers play over work, and this distinction drives much of the story's narrative.

8.      What ‘Great law of human action’ did Tom discover?

Tom Sawyer discovered the "Great Law of Human Action," which is that people desire what they can't have or what is forbidden. This insight forms the basis of many of his adventures and schemes throughout "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain.
