It's also essential for finding employment as it affects one's confidence, ability to handle interviews, and overall professional demeanor. Employers often value candidates who demonstrate self-assurance and a strong sense of self-worth.

Discuss these questions in pairs and answer them briefly. 1. What do you understand by self-esteem? 2. Why do you think some people feel superior to others? 3. Why do you think some people feel inferior to others? 4. What do you consider to be the right approach to understanding the worth of individual?


1. Self-esteem is the overall opinion and feeling one has about their own worth, abilities, and value as a person.

Self-esteem refers to the subjective and overall assessment of one's own worth, value, and abilities. It reflects a person's perception of themselves, including their confidence, self-respect, and belief in their own capabilities.


2. Some people may feel superior to others due to factors like past achievements, social status, or a need to boost their own confidence.

 **Achievements:** They might have accomplished significant goals, which can lead to a sense of superiority.


 **Social Status:** Having a higher social or economic status can contribute to feelings of superiority.


 **Ego and Self-Preservation:** In some cases, feeling superior can be a defense mechanism to protect one's self-esteem or cover up insecurities.


 **Cultural or Societal Factors:** Cultural norms and societal pressures can play a role in fostering superiority, especially in competitive or hierarchical societies.


**Personality Traits:** Some individuals have more dominant or competitive personalities, which can lead them to perceive themselves as superior in various situations.

It's important to note that feeling superior to others is not necessarily a healthy or constructive mindset, as it can lead to arrogance and hinder positive social interactions.


3. Conversely, some people feel inferior to others because of past failures, comparisons, or societal pressures that make them doubt their worth.
