Chapter: 4 Assertive Skills  

Alpaca: A domesticated South American mammal known for its soft, woolly fleece.

Example: Alpaca wool is highly prized for its warmth and softness in making clothing items.

 

Complacence: A feeling of self-satisfaction or contentment, often to the point of smugness.

Example: Her complacence about her success made her seem arrogant.

 

Disconcerting: Causing confusion, disturbance, or unease.

Example: The sudden change in plans was disconcerting to the team.

 

Chancel: The area in a church where the altar is located typically reserved for clergy.

Example: The choir sang from the chancel during the church service.

 

Genuflect: To bend one's knee as a sign of reverence or worship, especially in a religious context.

Example: People genuflect when entering the church as a sign of respect.

 

Cassock: A long, close-fitting robe worn by clergy, often black or another dark color.

Example: The priest wore a cassock during the religious ceremony.

 

Discreet: Showing good judgment and careful behavior in order to keep something confidential.

Surplice: Wearing a surplice, which is a white, lightweight liturgical vestment worn by clergy.

Jockeyed: To manipulate or manoeuvre something, often in a competitive or strategic context.

Obsequious: Excessively obedient or attentive to gain favor or approval from others.

Ecclesiastical: Related to the church or its hierarchy and structure.

Example: The ecclesiastical authorities made decisions regarding church doctrine.

 

Deportment: The way a person behaves, carries them, or conducts themselves in social situations.

Example: Her polite deportment and good manners made a positive impression on others.

 

Irreproachable: Beyond criticism; faultless or blameless.

Example: His conduct at work was irreproachable, and he was highly regarded by his colleagues.

 

Unimpeachable: Unable to be criticized or doubted; entirely trustworthy.

Example: The witness's unimpeachable testimony played a crucial role in the trial.

 

Sallow: Having a pale, sickly, or yellowish complexion.

Example: After being ill for several days, her complexion appeared sallow.

 

Lamentable: Deserving of pity or regret; unfortunate or distressing.

Example: The lamentable state of the impoverished neighborhood called for immediate action.

 

Prudence: The quality of being cautious, wise, and sensible in decision-making.

Example: It's important to exercise prudence when making financial investments.

 

Latitude: Freedom to make choices and decisions; the scope or range of options.

Example: The project allowed for some latitude in choosing the design elements.
