Discuss these questions in pairs and answer them briefly.


1. What do you understand by the word professionalism?


Professionalism encompasses a set of attitudes, behaviors, and qualities that reflect a commitment to excellence and integrity in one's work. It involves being reliable, responsible, ethical, and maintaining appropriate boundaries in professional relationships.


2. Whom would you call professionals? Give at least five examples.


Professionals are individuals who have undergone specialized education, training, and/or certification in their respective fields and adhere to standards of practice. Examples include doctors who provide medical care, lawyers who offer legal advice, engineers who design and construct infrastructure, teachers who educate students, and accountants who manage financial records.


3. Whom would you classify as being non-professionals? Give at least five examples.


Non-professionals typically lack formal education or training in a specific field and may engage in less specialized or skilled work. Examples include unskilled laborers who perform manual tasks, informal workers such as street vendors or day laborers, individuals in temporary or precarious employment situations, some freelancers without specialized expertise, and those in entry-level positions without professional qualifications.


4. Why do some professionals behave unprofessionally sometimes?


Several factors may contribute to professionals behaving unprofessionally at times. These include work-related stress or burnout, personal issues affecting job performance, lack of proper supervision or accountability mechanisms, pressures to prioritize productivity over ethical considerations, and instances of moral or ethical lapses. Additionally, workplace culture, organizational norms, and external factors such as economic instability or competitive pressures can influence professional behavior.

1. How does an effective understanding of professionalism help in performing one's job satisfactorily and successfully?

2. How can individuals develop their professional skills continuously throughout their career and their lives?


Individuals can develop their professional skills continuously by seeking learning opportunities such as workshops, seminars, online courses, and mentorship programs. They can also engage in self-reflection, feedback solicitation, and skill practice to refine their abilities over time, adapting to changing industry trends and demands.


3. What are some of the ways in which professionalism has been enshrined in a code of conduct of certain organisations such as the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and State Bank of India Officers Association (SBIOA)?  Personally, one can enhance professionalism by prioritizing punctuality, effective communication, empathy, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Balancing duty and personal considerations requires setting boundaries, managing time effectively, and aligning personal values with professional responsibilities to achieve harmony and fulfillment in both realms.
