📘 PHONETICS LEARNING MATERIAL (Quick Overview)

1️    What is Phonetics?

Phonetics is the study of human speech sounds – how they are produced (articulatory), transmitted (acoustic), and perceived (auditory).

2️    Branches of Phonetics:

  • Articulatory: how speech sounds are made with mouth and vocal tract.
  • Acoustic: sound waves and frequencies.
  • Auditory: how we hear and recognize speech sounds.

3️    Key Concepts:

  • Voicing: whether vocal cords vibrate (/b/ is voiced, /p/ is not).
  • Place of articulation: where the sound is made (lips, teeth, palate).
  • Manner of articulation: how air is manipulated (stop, nasal, fricative, etc.).
